Here's Johnny & The Phone Booth Scene

The reason I am drawn to these two images is not just the fact of how iconic these scenes have remained, being referenced in other movies or parodied in television. The first draws me in to the madness that Jack Nicholson's character Jack Torrance has finally succumbed to. Just the image of his face in the hole he cut into the door with the ax shows how far his sanity has slipped. The second image shows the fear that Tippi Hedren's character Melanie Daniels is experiencing during a series unexpected bird attacks in Bodega Bay, California. During the madness that ensues after some seagulls attack a man pumping gasoline, a sudden frenzy descends upon the town. Melanie flees into a phone booth for safety. She believes she is safe after a couple of seagulls smack against the glass until one crashes into the glass wall with its head stuck. And just as suddenly as the madness began, it vanishes, causing one woman in a dinner to blame the mysterious bird attacks on Melanie. These images both sum up fear, fear that the a father's madness causes his family and the fear that unknown causes brings upon people.I am drawn to the fear that these scenes induce upon the characters and the audience.
